Want a little background on why I love this song so much?
Let’s travel back to high school, when Twiggy was the gold standard of beauty.
And yes, I’m fully aware some of you stopped reading right there to Google who Twiggy is. I’ll wait.
At 5'10" and 160 pounds, there was absolutely no way I was ever going to be that girl, no matter how hard I tried.
Trust me, I gave it a shot. Ever heard of the grapefruit diet!?
I’ve always been a “too.”
Not a size two.
Too big.
Too loud.
Too opinionated.
Too curious.
Too questioning.
Too much of this, too much of that.
If you’ve ever seen Mona Lisa Smile, there’s that exchange:
“You can conform to what other people expect of you, or...”
“I know. Be ourselves.”
“You’re the one who said I could do anything I wanted.”
Well, it turns out “anything I wanted” didn’t include fitting neatly into somebody else’s mold.
It’s taken me most of my life to stop apologizing for my bigness—not my size, but my presence. My voice. My ideas. My refusal to shrink myself to make other people comfortable.
That’s why this song hits home for me. It reminds us that it’s okay if you don’t fit the mold. In fact, some of us were never meant to.
Be your authentic self—whatever that looks like.
The world already has enough copies. It can handle a few originals.
