NEVER TRUST A PIANO: FIVE FOR FIGHTING AND EDWIN MCCAIN

June 17, 2026

A great show β€” and a a surprising secret hidden inside a beautiful grand piano.
A great show β€” and a a surprising secret hidden inside a beautiful grand piano.

Never Trust a Piano: Five for Fighting and Edwin McCain

Part of Team Saints headed down to Morgantown, West Virginia last night to catch Five for Fighting and Edwin McCain at the historic Metropolitan Theatre (produced by Drusky Entertainment).

One thing we've learned over the years is that if you want to become better musicians, producers, performers, and promoters, you have to go see other artists work.

So whenever we get the chance, we try to catch as many shows as possible and spend some time networking with the people who make them happen.

Both artists were fantastic.

Five for Fighting delivered favorites like Superman (It's Not Easy), 100 Years, and The Riddle.

Edwin McCain had the crowd singing along to I'll Be and I Could Not Ask for More, while sharing stories that made the evening feel more like a conversation than a concert.

A great show. Great songs. Great storytelling!

One thing that caught our attention happened after the music stopped.

At The Dead Air Saints, we're admittedly a little obsessed with staging, production, and how touring acts move equipment from city to city.

While most people are watching the performers, we're often staring at the gear.

Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik opened the evening seated behind a beautiful grand piano positioned center stage.

Naturally, we assumed it belonged to the theatre.

The Metropolitan Theatre first opened its doors in 1924. Over the last century it has hosted legends including Don Knotts, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Helen Hayes, and even Harry Houdini.

A grand theatre with a grand piano seemed like a perfectly reasonable assumption.

Then the show ended.

A crew member rolled out a ginormous road case.

The lid came off.

The side panels folded away.

And suddenly that beautiful grand piano transformed into something entirely different...

Inside this "grand piano" was a modern Nord Stage 4 88-key keyboard.

The "piano" wasn't a piano at all.

It was an elaborate touring shell designed to look like one. A standard modern keyboard slides into it to complete the illusion.

A few minutes later the grand piano shell was on its side, minus the Nord keyboard, and was packed into a road case taller than some of the road crew loading it. See the attached photo.

We were equal parts impressed, confused, and jealous.

Musicians spend years learning songs.
Road crews spend years learning magic tricks.

A fun night all around.

Special thanks to the staff at Gibbie's Pub across the street from the Metropolitan.

Great food. Great drinks. Great people.

The perfect place to start a very fun night.

Different Worlds. Same Signal.
